Best Snow and Ice Care for Asphalt Driveways
Winter is the hardest season on an asphalt driveway. It's not usually the snow itself that does the damage. It's water freezing in cracks, steel blades gouging the surface, and plows chewing up the edges. A few smart choices in ice melt and shovels make a real difference by spring.

Is ice melt bad for asphalt?
Less than you might think. Asphalt holds up to salt much better than concrete does. Regular rock salt doesn't really eat the asphalt itself. The trouble is indirect: every time ice melts and refreezes, water gets deeper into cracks, then expands. More melt-freeze cycles mean more crack damage. Salt also kills grass along the edges and gets tracked into the house.
So the rules are simple:
- Shovel first, melt second. Ice melt is for the thin layer you can't shovel, not a replacement for shoveling.
- Use less than you think. A light scatter works better than a heavy dump, and leftover pellets are just more salt in your lawn.
- Be extra gentle on fresh sealer. If you sealed this fall, use the mildest product you can for the first winter.
- Fill cracks before winter. A sealed crack can't fill with water. See our crack filler guide.
Which ice melt to use
Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is the gentlest option for pavement, plants, and pets. It's slower and has less punch in deep cold, so it's best for normal winter days and freshly sealed driveways.
Calcium chloride is the strongest common melter. It works far below the temperature where rock salt stops working, and it gives off heat as it dissolves. It's fine on cured asphalt in normal amounts, but keep it off new concrete walkways and away from plants.
Rock salt (sodium chloride) is cheap and fine on asphalt, but it slows down a lot once it gets really cold and it's the hardest on lawns and concrete steps.
Pet-safe, salt-free blends cost more but are easiest on paws and on everything else.
Shovels and plows: protect the surface
A steel-edged shovel or ice chopper is the fastest way to scrape off your sealer and nick the asphalt, especially on a fresh coat. Use a plastic (poly) shovel or pusher for asphalt. If you use a snow blower, set the skid shoes so the scraper bar rides just above the surface.
If a plow service does your driveway, ask them to keep the blade slightly raised or use a rubber or poly cutting edge. The edges of the driveway are the weakest part, and a plow truck that rides off the edge cracks and crumbles them. Driveway markers put in before the ground freezes show the plow exactly where the asphalt ends.
Our winter picks
Snow Joe Calcium Magnesium Acetate Ice Melter (20 lb)
- CMA is the gentlest common de-icer for pavement, plants, and pets.
- Slower and weaker than calcium chloride on very cold days.
Our pick for everyday use, especially the first winter after sealing. Spread it lightly after you shovel.
Peladow Calcium Chloride Pellets Snow and Ice Melter (50 lb)
- Works at temperatures where rock salt quits, and acts fast.
- Harsher on plants and concrete steps. Easy to overuse.
Keep a bag for the worst nights. A light handful goes a long way. Store it sealed; it pulls moisture from the air.
Safe Paw Pet Safe Ice Melt, Salt-Free (8 lb)
- Salt-free formula that is easy on paws, lawns, and pavement.
- Costs more per pound, and the jug doesn't go far on a long driveway.
If your dog walks the driveway every day, this is the one to use on the walkway and steps, at least.
True Temper 1603400 Poly Snow Shovel/Pusher, D-Grip Steel Handle
- Poly blade pushes snow without gouging asphalt. Steel handle is sturdy.
- A poly blade won't break up hard ice. Let the ice melt do that.
A plastic pusher is what we'd use on any asphalt driveway, and it's a must on a driveway sealed this year.
Reflective Driveway Markers, 48" Orange Fiberglass Snow Stakes (20-pack)
- Fiberglass stakes with reflective tape mark your driveway edges in deep snow.
- Put them in before the ground freezes, or they're hard to push in.
Edge damage from plows is one of the most common repairs we see in spring. A pack of stakes is cheap insurance.
Spring checkup
When the snow is gone, walk the driveway. Fill any new cracks, patch any holes with one of our recommended pothole repair products, and do the water test from our guide to how often to sealcoat. Catching winter damage early keeps a small repair from turning into a big one.
