Best Asphalt Cold Patch for Driveways: Bags, Buckets and Bulk

Cold patch is the fastest way to fix a pothole without a paving crew. Some brands stay soft and push out the first time a car turns on them; others set up firm and blend in. We compared the ones homeowners actually find on Amazon, by size of the job, the weather you're working in and how long the fix needs to last.

What separates a good cold patch from a bad one

We also have a broader guide to pothole repair products and tampers. This guide focuses on choosing the right cold patch.

  • Costs more per pound than bagged patch.
  • A bucket covers only small holes.

  • Low price for a 50 lb bag.

Road Rescue Black Asphalt Repair (50 lb)

$$ Best for: driveway edges and general patching

  • Ready to use, no mixing.
  • 50 lb bag for bigger repairs.
  • Fewer reviews than the big brands.
  • Like all cold patch, needs compacting.

A solid alternative when the bigger brands are out of stock or priced up. Works well for building back a broken driveway edge.

True Temper 10 x 10 in. Tamper

  • Simple and durable.
  • Heavy, which is the point.
  • One more tool to store.

Most failed patches weren't tamped enough. A tamper costs about the same as a bag of patch and lasts forever.

How to make a cold patch last

  1. Cut or chip away loose edges so the hole has firm sides.
  2. Remove water, dirt and loose stone. A shop vac works well.
  3. Fill in layers of 1 to 2 inches and tamp each layer hard.
  4. Overfill the top by about 1/2 inch, then tamp it flush or drive over it slowly with a tire (put plywood on top to protect the tire).
  5. Wait several weeks before you sealcoat over the patch.

Lots of potholes, or a driveway that's breaking up in one area? That's usually a sign the base underneath is failing, and a professional patch (cut out, rebuilt and paved hot) will save money long-term. Get a free quote or check rough prices in our calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold patch permanent?

Good cold patch can last years if the hole is cleaned and tamped well, but a hot-mix asphalt patch is more permanent. Think of cold patch as a long-lasting repair, not a replacement for paving.

Can I use cold patch in winter?

Yes, many products are made for cold and wet weather. Store the bag or bucket somewhere warm first so it's easier to work.

How much cold patch do I need?

One 50 lb bag fills about 2 square feet at 1 inch deep after compacting. Measure the hole's length, width and depth and buy one extra bag.
