Gallons = square feet × number of coats ÷ coverage per gallon, plus the extra you choose for waste. The default is the rule many sealcoaters use: one gallon for every 50 square feet, per coat. A 1,000 sq ft driveway with two coats needs 40 gallons, 44 with 10 percent extra.
Is that rule right? We checked it against what the manufacturers print on their pails and data sheets. It holds up as a safe number: it matches old, rough asphalt on the first coat and leaves you a little extra on a smoother driveway.

Two things to notice. Retail pails are usually 4.75 gallons, not 5, so a "5-gallon" pail covers a bit less than you'd think. And commercial bulk sealer is sold as a concentrate that gets mixed with water and sand, which is why its coverage per gallon of concentrate looks so much higher.
Tips for buying the right amount
- Measure each section. Break an L-shape or a parking pad into rectangles and add them with the "Add another area" button.
- Old gray asphalt drinks sealer. The first coat on porous blacktop uses the most. Pick the "old, rough or porous" rate or keep the 50 sq ft rule.
- Thin coats, not thick ones. Two thin coats beat one heavy coat. Thick coats crack, track and take forever to cure.
- Buy one extra pail. Unopened pails can usually be returned. Running out mid-coat leaves a line.

Jetcoat 10-Year Supreme Driveway Filler & Sealer (4.75 gal)

- A strong all-rounder at a lower price than the 10-year.
- Less filler, so it hides fewer surface flaws.

Frequently asked questions
How much sealer do I need for a 1,000 sq ft driveway?
Using the contractor rule of thumb of 50 square feet per gallon per coat, two coats on 1,000 square feet take 40 gallons, or 44 gallons with 10 percent extra. That is 9 five-gallon pails. At the coverage printed on retail pails (about 250 to 350 square feet per 4.75-gallon pail), two coats work out to roughly 6 to 8 pails before any extra.
How many square feet does a 5-gallon pail of driveway sealer cover?
Retail pails are usually 4.75 gallons. Jetcoat lists 250 to 350 square feet per pail depending on how porous the pavement is. Black Jack Drive-Maxx 1000 lists about 300 square feet on rough or worn driveways and 350 on smooth ones. Latex-ite Ultra Shield lists 300 to 400 square feet on rough or unsealed blacktop and 400 to 500 on smooth, previously sealed driveways. That is one coat.
Is 50 square feet per gallon per coat the right number?
It is a safe, slightly generous rule. Manufacturer rates for retail pails work out to about 53 to 105 square feet per gallon per coat, and the low end of that range is old, rough, porous asphalt on the first coat. So 50 rarely leaves you short; on a smooth or recently sealed driveway you will have some sealer left over.
How much sand and water do I mix into bulk sealer?
Follow the data sheet for your product. SealMaster's mix design for MasterSeal Concentrate is, per 100 gallons of concentrate, 15 to 25 gallons of water, 200 to 500 pounds of 40 to 70 mesh sand and half a gallon to 2 gallons of Top Tuff additive. For SealMaster Coal Tar Pavement Sealer it is 30 to 40 gallons of water and 300 to 500 pounds of sand per 100 gallons. Ready-to-use retail pails should not be thinned.
One coat or two?
Two thin coats. They wear longer and look more even than one heavy coat, and manufacturers warn that thick coats can crack, track and cure poorly. The second coat usually goes on after the first is dry to the touch, often the next day.
Why add 10 percent extra?
Edges, low spots and thirsty patches soak up more than the label says, and some sealer always stays in the pail and on the squeegee. Running out halfway through a coat leaves a visible line, so it is cheaper to buy one more pail and return it unopened if you do not need it.
